BRIEF: WELCOME WEEK

I was asked to create a page for new students that would offer them a simple way to create their Welcome Week timetable.

1. RESEARCH (PERSONAS, DATA, COMPETITOR)

My first step in any project is to ask my client to complete my quick design brief. This helps us get on the same page and focus on user needs. As this was a smaller project working with a familar client, after a refresher with the personas, we sat together and drew up some paper wireframe sketches.

I wanted the page to be very simple on the first visit so users would focus on creating their timetable. I worked with our client to choose the questions a user would answer to generate their speciic timetable. Once the user has answered these questions their timetable would be visible to them for all future visits. The events could also be downloaded to their calendar app.

2. WIREFRAME (TALK, SKETCH, USER FLOWS, WIREFRAMES)

3. CONCEPTS AND DESIGNS

Once I'd created the wireframes I started work on the concepts. I used Sketch protoyping to make the concepts into something I could test at my monthly user group Sessions. Here's how the final design looks to a user on their first visit:

Upon clicking the 'Create timetable' button:

Once the user has created their timetable. Clicking the cog icon alows them to reset their settings or download the events to their calendar app. Clicking on an event displays its details over the right image or as an overlay (on mobile).

4. TEST

As a smaller project we built this page and tested it in our monthly User Groups. I decided to sit with individual students to see if creating a timetable was intuitive. I wanted to see if they'd understand the meaning of the Cog icon in this context and if they'd notice they could download the calendar. After this qualitative review I added a 'Download your calendar' link and A-B tested it in my user group. Users clicked the link.

5. REVIEW: (DATA, USER GROUP FEEDBACK, ITERATE)

This project was a huge success with the vast majority of users creating their timetables. A substantial percentage also downlaoded the events to their calednar apps meaning we saved them the trouble of revsiting our website.
